Caravan Writers’ Guild Awards 2019 (John Wickersham and Douglas King)

In its annual Gala Dinner at Stonebridge Golf Club on 16th October 2019, the Caravan Writers’ Guild was delighted to announce the winners of the John Wickersham Award for Video, and of the Douglas King Award for Journalism.Caravan Writers Guild Dinner

The Awards are aimed at recognising journalistic excellence within the leisure vehicle industry. The Guild organizes the awards, and Vantage Insurance Services Ltd kindly co-sponsor them.

Says Stuart Craig, Group Marketing Manager of Vantage Insurance Services:

“Vantage Insurance Services Ltd is once again delighted to be co-sponsoring these prestigious awards. We aim to help inspire people to produce entertaining, informative, and inspiring content in the promotion of our wonderful industry. It’s our way of giving back to those who support us year on year.”

Building on the hard work and success of the previous Awards Co-Ordinator Terry Owen, the Awards were updated this year to include new criteria for both the entry qualifications and the judging process.

The winner of each award received £1000 and a glass trophy, which were presented by Chris Apperley, Chairman of the Caravan Writers’ Guild, and Nigel Coppen, Business Development Director of Vantage Insurance. All those who entered are listed below, and the Caravan Writers’ Guild is delighted to introduce their work to a wider audience.

John Wickersham Award for Video

Six entries were received for the John Wickersham Award for Video, and it was encouraging that many of these came from non-Guild members. These were independently judged for a variety of elements including being of the appropriate length, technically correct (sound, focus, lighting, editing process,) presentation, and a high level of innovation and creativity to keep the viewer engaged throughout.

John Sootheran of AJS Content Solutions comfortably cruised into first place with a superb, slick production commissioned by Swift, highlighting the S-Pod product. Judges praised the video as ‘professional’ and ‘the ideal length for the subject’.

Runner up in this award was Andy Barnett of Motorhome Adventures Blog. Together with his wife Michelle, Andy produced an excellent video which was praised for its ‘excellent camera work’. As the only finalist who was not a CWG member, the committee was delighted to offer Andy one year’s Associate Membership of the Guild.

Douglas King Award for Journalism

A grand total of 16 entries were received for the Douglas King Award for Journalism, encompassing both established magazine titles and personal blogs. It was delightful to see so many writers enter the Awards for the first time. All entries were judged by an independent panel who assessed many aspects including structure, presentation and accuracy of facts, grammar, and level of engagement and creativity.

2019 has been a whirlwind year for a relative newcomer to the industry, Karla Baker. In a short period of time, her writing skills, enthusiasm, and her passion for inspiring others has earned her commissions with high profile magazines across different markets. It was a touching piece written for the Caravan and Motorhome Club Magazine that won over the judges and saw Karla win the Douglas King Award for Journalism 2019.
