The Douglas King Award for Journalism

Prize money doubled to £1,000

The Caravan Writers' Guild is delighted to announce a doubling of the prize money for this award to £1,000. This has been made possible by a decision of the CWG committee to match the prize money put up by our main sponsor, Vantage Insurance Services Limited.

The award was created in memory of the well known writer and Guild member, Douglas King who passed away last year. Douglas tirelessly served the Guild for many years during which time he became both its Secretary and Chairman.

The award will be made annually to the journalist who, in the opinion of an independent panel of judges, produces the best article published on any subject relating to the caravan industry.

This includes but is not limited to:

• General articles and reviews
• Caravan and motorhome touring
• The holiday home and park home sector
• Technical articles

The article must have been published within a defined 12 month time period ending on 31st July each year. Submissions must be made to the Guild's Secretary (secretary@caravanwritersguild.org.uk) no later than 31st August each year.

The award is open to all journalists irrespective of age, discipline or Guild membership. The published media may include magazines, newspapers, websites, TV and radio.

In order to attract a good number of entrants the award is to be advertised to other guilds of writers including The Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild, The British Guild of Travel Writers and The Guild of Motoring Writers.

The award is to take the form of a trophy, to be held by the winner for one year, and a cash amount of £1,000. It will be presented at the Guild's industry dinner, held in October each year to coincide with the Motorhome and Caravan Show at the NEC.

The judging panel will comprise independent people selected from the industry but having no direct connection with the Caravan Writers' Guild or its members.

Group Marketing Manager Stuart Craig said "Vantage Insurance Services Limited is delighted to be supporting The Caravan Writers' Guild in the creation of this award. It is fitting that such a great ambassador for caravanning as Doug King can be an inspiration to others to produce quality journalism about camping and caravanning.

I knew and worked with Doug for over 30 years and he was insightful in his journalism, dogged in his approach to get to the bottom of a story, and yet remained a true gentleman throughout.

In recent years we enjoyed exchanging views on insurance and all caravanning matters.

In supporting this award we hope to be able to give something back to the next generation of ‘Doug Kings’ to champion our industry."
